WAL-MART Foundation supports Nutrition and Healthy Eating at Learn & Grow!

The WAL-MART Foundation funded the Y.E.S. House’s Chuck Wagon –Children-Nutrition that the Learn and Grow afterschool program teaches.  The foundation chose to support the program in the generous amount of $35,000.00

Learn and Grow serves children age 5 to 12; and 94% children are either from Title I schools or low-income families. One of the components of the program is gardening and culinary art.  In 2016, through the grant, Learn and Grow acquired a modern Chuck Wagon called "Charlie Cart" to provide nutritional education to children in the program.  It is a movable cart that contains a sink, a stove and a counter that allows teaching a nutritional curriculum in non-traditional settings i.e. next to vegetable gardens, green houses, areas where children are growing herbs indoors, etc. By participating in the Project the students learn about science behind gardening and nutrition and making it applicable through the hands-on experiences of growing their own vegetables, and preparing nutritional meals. 176 children benefited from the Chuck Wagon –Children-Nutrition in the last 8 months.

Photos show how Charlie Cart works. Thank you to the WAL-MART Foundation for supporting the children!Picture1.jpg

The Charlie Cart's Uses:

Through a grant the Y.E.S. House acquired a modern Chuck Wagon, called the "Charlie Cart", to provide nutritional and culinary education to children ages 5 to 12 in our Learn and Grow program . It is a movable cart that contains a sink, a stove, cook top, cooking tools and counters. The cart provides the opportunity for teaching a nutritional curriculum in any setting i.e. next to vegetable gardens, areas where children are growing herbs indoors, gymnasiums, etc.
